Labiaplasty of The Labia Minora
Women may choose to have a labiaplasty performed by Dr Zadeh for the following reasons:
- Concerns with appearance due to the size, discoloration, or length of the inner or outer labia
- Irritation during physical activity caused by pulling and discomfort
- Pain, pulling and irritation during intercourse
- Significant asymmetry
The term labiaplasty refers to a procedure that reduces the length of the inner lips (labia minora) around the vagina. It is the most commonly performed aesthetic genital plastic surgery and it can relieve symptoms women experience from twisting and tugging of the labia. The goal of the procedure is to reduce the labia minora (inner lips) so that they don’t hang below the hair-bearing labia majora (outer lips).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the procedure ?
The most common type of labiaplasty is the trim procedure, in which the extra tissue is removed and sewn up directly. Next in popularity is the wedge procedure, which maintains a natural border after a pie-shaped piece of tissue has been removed. Extra folds of the clitoral hood can also be reduced at the same time. Closure is usually done with absorbable (melting) sutures.
Anesthesia for labiaplasty ?
Labiaplasty is a procedure that can be done under either local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia.
What are the results of labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty typically results in shorter labia that no longer hang down below the level of the hair-bearing labia majora. The results can have extremely positive effects for patients. Our patients have experienced improved self-confidence, increased physical comfort, and improved sexual experiences because of reduced anxiety about their labia appearance.
What is the recovery length period?
In most cases it is quick and patients are back to work within 4-7 days – occasionally additional time away from work may be required. We will provide you with special post-operative instructions that will give you all the information you need on how to have a safe and quick recovery. Proper hygiene following surgery is instrumental in ensuring that the wound heals well. You can clean the area delicately every day in the shower, letting the soapy water run off your body. Dr Zadeh will also recommend sitz baths.
Bruising and Discomfort
After labiaplasty surgery, you will have bruising, swelling, and minor discomfort in the groin area. Swelling and bruising will be most noticeable after the first day and will slowly subside over a period of 2 – 3 weeks. Some spotting after labia reduction is normal and should stop after a few days. Dr. Zadeh will be giving you prior to the surgery, a prescription for pain medication to take home with you. That way, the medication will be at your disposal once you arrive home from the surgery. Your stitches will be dissolvable and will not need to be physically removed. It will take 3 months for the labia to heal completely.
