Laser Hair Removal

Home 9 Cosmetic Surgery and Treatments 9 Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a noninvasive technique that uses highly concentrated light to penetrate hair follicles. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair shaft in the follicle generating heat which damages the follicle to inhibit future hair growth. Therefore, plucking hair before treatment reduces the efficacy of the laser treatment as the target is absent.

Because laser hair removal only affects actively growing hair follicles, it may take several laser hair removal treatments to provide significant hair reduction. Additionally, while laser hair removal effectively slows hair growth, it doesn’t guarantee permanent hair removal. Periodic maintenance treatments may be needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hair removal permanent?

Although laser hair removal reduces the number of unwanted hairs in a given area, it doesn’t get rid of them completely. When the hair grows back, they will be finer, lighter, and fewer in number. Most people require between four and six sessions, and occasional maintenance may be required.

How does hair removal work?

Unlike traditional hair reduction devices that apply energy to an area all at once, our equipment uses motion technology that delivers multiple lower fluence pulses at a high repetition rate; protecting therefore the skin, while progressively raising the follicle temperature to the optimal level for hair removal. At the same time, the handpiece provides continuous cooling, even at maximum power, to cool the skin before, during and after treatment. This technology for heating and cooling makes our laser hair removal procedure safe, effective and comfortable for most skin types.

What to expect ?

When you first arrive at your appointment, our esthetician, Lida, will adjust the equipment according to the hair being treated and your skin type. You will also be provided with patient block-out glasses and will be asked to wear them for the totality of the procedure.

Your skin will then be prepped with a cooling gel (similar to the gels used for an ultrasound procedure). Once the gel is applied, you will be ready for your treatment.

Procedures are usually quick, lasting on average between 5 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. During the procedure, you will feel a minimal amount of discomfort. Patients usually indicate that the treatment feels a little like a warm, rubber band snap sensation when the light hits and penetrates the skin.

After the treatment

You may experience some redness that should resolve within a few hours. Feel free to contact us if it does not. In some spots, you will see a darkening of the treated areas followed by fading and flaking off at a later stage. Results depend on your skin type, the number of treatments, and the area treated. Lida will provide you with complete information about the post treatment care and results.
